Mack Brown, The Anti-Saban

Posted by srr50 on January 4th, 2010 under Football

The differences between the two coaches involved in this week’s BCS Championship Game were made even more evident today in this L.A. Times column.

Love this quote:

He (Brown) followed Alabama Coach Nick Saban to the microphone at a news conference at Disneyland over the weekend. Saban looked as though he’d rather be having a root canal and called things other than playing the game “clutter,” but Brown, when asked whether this was fun for him, had a sunny response.

“I always enjoy the journey,” he said with a smile.

  1. Loved this part:

“‘I love to have them at Disneyland,’ he said. ‘It’s something they really look forward to.’

“Somewhere, Saban was barfing on his clipboard.”

I’ve looked back at Saban’s bowl record and he is 6-4.

If acting like an obsessive micro-manager is his usual routine, then I’m liking Mack’s approach.

It isn’t as if the Texas assistants are getting second rides on the Pirates of the Carribean. They are working round the clock, same as Bama.

I meant to say 4-6 is his bowl record.

  4. 4-7 sure has a special ring to it.

Want a surprising stat? The last time Bama beat a ranked team in a game played outside Dixie? 1989- Penn State. Yeah, 20 years.

Of course, they have only played a handful of games outside Dixie in that span.

TaylorT — That is probably typical of most SEC teams.

I don’t think I would mind an obsessive micro-manager. For one thing, there’s about a .03% chance that Greg Davis would have survived as long under such a coach as he has at Texas.

Something not noted much…past few SEC MNCs…

    2003 LSU- Sugar Bowl
    2006 Florida- Fiesta
    2007 LSU- Sugar Bowl
    2008 Florida- Orange Bowl

3 out of 4 were in stadia that were almost home settings for the SEC school.

I can’t help but think that these people skills helped Mack survive having 60 hung on him twice by OU.

  10. And played against OU or tOSU, habitual big game chokers and all around dooshbags

  11. We are seriously blessed at Texas.

Got to go eat now. Starting on Wednesday, I’ll be too nervous to eat anything until after the game Thursday night. Ugh.

  12. Ambivalence.

  13. Saban views everything other than the game as “clutter”.

In other words, if it’s about the players being college kids, fuck them.

Reason 3,247 why I Like Mack.

I would guess Muschamp is more like his old mentor Nick than Mack when it comes to bowl game “clutter”.

Personally, I am not a fan of all the stupid shit teams do for a week leading up to a bowl game.

  15. I gotta be honest, I like to see some looseness in Mack and our sqaud.

Given how tightly wound the fans are about our prospects on Thursday, this is a relief. I’m looking squarely at all ya’ll.

Look, Saban has had success doing it his way…intense, removing the “clutter”, win at all costs, in your face football.

Mack, too, has had success doing it a different way…milk and cookies, the “seal” clap, and just enjoying the “pageantry” that is college football.

The two things that will win or lose the game are the plays being called by Davis/Muschamp, and the players ability to execute them. Clearly, scheme is important. Muschamp’s scheme for aggy almost ruined the season for us. Davis’ scheme against husker almost did the same thing. But, as far as attitude on the field, that’s up to the players themselves. Studdard and Sendlein had the same coaches as Chris Hall. They were mean and pissed off. Chris Hall loves to smile. Attitude comes from within.

By the way…since when has a team gone so far with a slightly Down Syndrome player at QB? They’ve already exceeded expectations…

  17. Love the quote about Muschamp running down the hall to assure Mack he’s not leaving.

First, fuck you. Second, the Cowboys won three Super Bowls under Aikman.

  19. Troy Aikman is Mike Piazza’s favorite quarterback.

And look what Stanford has done with Gerhardt.

Down Syndrome? Is that your attempt at making a funny? That fails on every conceivable level. Aside from being 46-7 and a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist, Colt McCoy is a primo student who was a finalist for the academic Heisman. Go fist yourself you fucking idiot.

  21. burnt orange outrage:

I believe he was taking a shot at Tony Romo.

If that’s the case, Pederast, sorry. I’m a tad high-strung this week. I totally missed the segue.

As for Romo, he’s acquitted himself very well this season. I was ready to give up on him but have been amazed/delighted in his maturation this season. He’s toned down his gunslinger act and now realizes that sometimes, throwing a ball out of bounds or taking a sack are the smart options.
