Where: Glendale, AZ
When: January 4th, 7:00 Central on ESPN
Line History: Opened at 7 and has bounced between 7 and 7.5 since the open. Total is 54.5.
Trips Rights’ Blind Line: I made TCU a 10 point favorite.
The Computer’s Pick: The computer is torn between the ypp model and power ratings model.
Conference Strength: MWC big time
When TCU has the ball.
Andy Dalton has quietly had an all-American caliber season leading the undefeated Horned Frogs. Dalton has completed nearly 60% of his passes for a ridiculous 9 yards per attempt good for 22 TD’s and only 5 picks. He’s also rushed for over 500 yards on the season and his legs will come into play tonight against Broncos. More importantly for the Junior from Katy is how he has played in TCU’s 3 biggest games @Clemson, @BYU, and vs. Utah. In those 3 games Dalton played nearly perfect football throwing for 6 TD’s and just 1 pick.

Looking forward to the first “national champion” being crowned tonight. Since there is no NCAA National Championship in football, there is no set criteria so any undefeated team can call themselves “national champions”. Why not?

The Ags were AP MNC in 1939, and that was a period when SWC teams had to fight for national respect.
If TCU wins, and Texas loses, they have a very strong claim to being the state’s best team. Why wouldn’t they? We wanted the BCS CG, and we got it, so we can’t complain about the tumble down effects should we lose.

This seems to have happened multiple times recently: any idea which has been more accurate this bowl season?

Boise State is going to give TCU all it can handle tonight, IMO.
dick said:

I’d go with the ypp model. Huck went back and assigned the ypp model to past games and changed the ratings because it was more accurate over the last two years, which is a better sample size than just the bowl games.

Ag_in_TX makes a very good point. That’s how USC got one of their recent national championships and I don’t even think they were undefeated. If everybody is D1 then they have a legit claim if they get past Smurf tonight.
And don’t even get started on the 73 Alabama titles.

Teams that usually spend a large portion of their bowl preperation complaining about the system that put them in their bowl game usually get struck with a dose of reality around the midway point of the first quarter.
At least that is what I am banking on. I have Boise to cover.

Gary Patterson is borderline retarded. Does he not watch game film? You run the ball between the tackles against Boise and then bring Dalton’s arm into the mix. Not the other way around. So far he’s cost his team 7 points and nearly its starting QB. Run the ball, and make Boise come out of that zone.

If not, they clearly should have. Two spread teams familiar with each other, playing a month since their last games, on a stage vastly bigger than they’re used to with a shit-ton to prove to the CFB world at large.
Recipe for bad if potentially exciting football.

I wonder what Ivan Maisel and Chris Fowler are thinking? If anyone remembers Fowler’s comments immediately following our win over Nebraska in the Big 12 CG. He was openly lobbying for voters to put TCU ahead of Texas on their ballots. Rumor is that ESPN led by Fowler were calling voters trying to influence their votes.

tree, is Antoine related to Anthony Hicks?
dick, I think TCU just came out too tight and played from behind all night. Execution just wasn’t there. They looked whipped before the last possession. Boise State came out with a few jitters, but played really well most of the game.

Funny blurb by none other than the man with the plan, Greg Davis, on Andy Dalton, from the NYT blog today:
When the Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis was asked if the Longhorns recruited Dalton, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior, there was silence.
“Andy Dalton?” Davis said in a telephone interview.
Reminded that Dalton is the starting quarterback for T.C.U., Davis still didn’t remember him until it was mentioned that he had red hair and played at Katy High. But even then Davis had little to say.
“He did a great job for them,” Davis said of Dalton and his days at Katy High. “I just remember him being a winner.”

Petersen really is a witch when it comes to calling well-timed gadget/trick plays in the Fiesta Bowl. That fake punt really put TCU back on its heels.
Jeez, we’d better beat Bama if there is any hope of breaking this ESPN/SEC hegemony. If not, it’s going to be Bama and Florida at 1 and 2, and 3 won’t be anywhere close.
I’m not sure if the rest of the country realizes just how much more insufferable that arrangement would get if we don’t win. Everyone in the ACC, Big East, Big 10, Pac-10, MWC etc. should be pulling for us, if no rooting interest one way or another exists.
Actually, in that regard, it’s a lot like 2005/06. Not sure if anyone can possibly comprehend just how obnoxious USC would have been with that win. Much more egregious than anything we’ve been able to muster, and God knows we’ve tried.

That was a painful game to watch. Not only are both teams vastly overrated, but I actually bet the game. Why the oddsmakers establish lines for high school games is beyond me. I promised I would not stoop so low.

http://www.sbnation.com/2010/1/5/1234443/boise-state-sad-cowbell-girl-blind
“Just minutes after the Fiesta Bowl halftime show, Boise State Sad Cowbell Girl (BSSCG) launched into Internet History and began the Uninspired Cowbell Twang That Launched A Thousand Animated GIFs. We all spent the rest of the game trying to figure out how we could have fun with the image of her despondent bell-smacking effort.
Turns out, we’re all evil monsters (then again, you already knew that). According to a Boise State student and a Chicago sportswriter , BSSCG is actually blind, which explains why she seemed so nonplussed with a camera right in her face.
