Open thread!
Whenever we writers at BC are too lazy to put up any original content (we’re 65% original content at this point), we just throw up an open thread. Let our mouthbreathing intelligent readership add their own thoughts. Some open threads are better than others, e.g. Trips ‘Univsion Lucha Libre’ open threads typically don’t draw that many responses.
So we’ll throw up a thread about today’s high school all star game because 1) there are five Texas commits and two Texas targets and 2) it’s on at 10am.
Talent acquisition is the lifeblood of any football program and pretty much any organization staffed by humans. Most Texas fans will only get to see a few highlite clips of our recruits and then extrapolate their success. Like when CloseToJumping told me with a straight face that ‘Chris Whaley will be better his freshman year than Ricky was as a senior.’
National all star games give you the chance to finally see your recruits go up against players of equal or better talent. That’s a better gauge than watching them play against Claude.
So keep an eye on Taylor Bible, Ashton Dorsey, Aaron Benson, Mike Davis and Adrian White. And also watch Jordan Hicks and Darius White.

Hopefully Adrian White impresses. Marcus Davis is now gone and I’m a bit worried about our situation at DB once the Browns graduate and AJ potentially leaves for the draft…
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 8:46 am
Speaking of CTJ, he also said that Marcus Davis would provide the sort of senior leadership that Roy Miller provided.
I have very low expectations of Adrian White. Maybe I’m crazy, and somebody has seen something different, but he seems to be an athlete but not a corner. See: Chykie Brown.

Jordan Hicks is a monster.
But christ, that D-lineman from Staten Island is unblockable.

The knock on Adrian White is that he practices better than he plays.

Finally got a look at A White and Mike Davis. (An aggie is controlling the Tivo here and making it tough to see our guys.)
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:34 am
Hicks looks to be can’t miss. He’s smart and the fact that he’s around every play speaks to effort. Put those with great athleticism and somebody (us!) is getting a freaking stud.
Urban spinning things for recruiting purposes. Basically, saying “It’s all good baby, youknowIain’t goin nowhere’s.”
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:36 am
Java, Tivo or not, it’s really tough to see his guys.
Florida did lose Matt Elam. One of their very first recruits.

magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:38 am
I love to see all the South talent split. D’arick Rogers going to Georgia means we’ll never have to deal with him.
Why we didn’t recruit Mack Brown is beyond me. Even OU was after him.
HenryJames said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:42 am
Dominique Easley going to Florida where he will be a pre med major.
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:45 am
Speaking of John Wooden I was at the bar yesterday and this guy and his daughter were having a beer together. No biggie right? The daughter had to be 70. Dude rolled in with a cane. Sat down and had a darker beer than me (fuck you magnus) then went on about his merry way. Awesome, or allsome.
Easley to Florida. FLA/BAMA are going to kick the shit out of eachother and the rest of the league for years to come. Provided Urban doesn’t leave to be DC at A&M.
HenryJames said:

Is Les Miles coaching the special teams for both sides?
Toadvine said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:46 am
The least impressive position play so far has been that of the quarterbacks. Florida is going to love Easley.
magnusbleuveigner said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 9:48 am
Now 9 recruits to Florida in this game? Hicks has to be feeling the pressure. This displeases me greatly. We need that kid, not to win the Big 12, but to win Natty Champs. Our rivals for the near future are obvious. It’s us, and the two SEC heavyweights for the forseeable future.
Toadvine said:

My thought was Mack is a recruiting machine. You get the number one player in Oklahoma who will likely be a receiver, then you get Davis, then you convince White to come play wr as well. The greatness of Mack is indescribable.

I will be shocked – shocked I say – if Cobbs ends up at WR.

Cobbs won’t be a reciever. He fights the ball like you fight happiness.

I think Muschamp is going to make Cobbs a big safety or a linebacker.
Toadvine said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 12:22 pm
I’d love a big safety. But I’m hoping Traylon Shead turns heads next weekend and Whaley becomes a quicker Cody Johnson ahead of next year. Awesome receiver + young QB is 3/4 of a good offense. But without some running game, you worry about Gilbert, at least early.
magnusbleuveigner said:

Cobbs will be a safety. He can’t break the starting line up at LB, not with this class. Mack said the athletes, Cobbs and Phillips, can pick what postion they start off at. Fastest route to the field will be at safety. I think Phillips makes more sense at reciever than Cobbs. Cobbs will be a mfer after the int though.
UCONN reciever just made a ridiculous catch. Looked like that Jerry Rice one hander that he did against the Lambs.

I don’t mind Cobbs getting a shot at RB. AT ALL.
And if that doesn’t work out, put him at safety. If he can pick up the reads – and why shouldn’t he, having been a QB and all? – think of the havoc he could wreak. I mean, a S who has receiver-quality ball skills and moves in traffic?
Then think of him back there with Phillips.

People forgot who their coaches were, apparently.
Jevan Snead was better in August 2006 than he is now.

Zac Robinson is an awful quarterback and I’ve said it all along. And, yes, Newy, Gundy is pathetic.
Toadvine said:
January 2nd, 2010 at 3:01 pm
NDS — I’m coming around on that. He has been terrible all day. Snead looked great at times last year, but has been terrible for this entire year. This has been an abortion of a football game. Not a defensive battle, despite the scores — just two terrible offenses turning the ball over and committing stupid penalties.

This is the second Cotton Bowl in recent memory that Houston Nutt has won by virtue of a painfully obvious no-call. Of course, we sacked Arky’s QB twice in the end zone that year (but no safety called) and Ole Miss’s 380 lb monster was only in the neutral zone once.

I have no animosity to OSU because I’m not from Oklahoma and my Longhorn wife is actually from Stillwater (figure that), but that is a program that truly believes it’s on the rise and close to the heels of UT and OU, and that Gundy is the right guy to get them to the top.
Could they be more wrong on all counts?

I do not anticipate a return to prominence for FSU.
I’m bullish on FSU football.
The resources are there. They have a great location and the name still carries weight in FL.
As for Fisher, he’s a very good recruiter. He’s also surrounded himself with some great recruiting assistants. Coley and Gran (who they took from Tennessee) are two of the very best south Florida recruiters. FSU has been killing it on the recruiting trail despite working with about half a staff since it was announced that Bowden was stepping down.
Plus it’s the ACC. That conference is ripe for the taking.

He ended the game with another pick and depending on how they rule one of the fumbles he could have 6 total turnovers today. That was some serious suck.

It’s like, how much more wrong could they be? And the answer is none. None more wrong.
Don’t look now, but our hoops team is playing like … well, like OkSU plays football and we’re getting pushed by Texas A&M at home.
That’s Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, to be precise.

Regardless, he’s awful. Game has passed him by a lot faster and more thoroughly than it did Bobby Bowden or has Mack Brown, his old punching bags. But I think the main thing is that those two actually, you know, give a shit.
